They emulate types of full-size theatrical masks that were used in performances of New Comedy, popular throughout southern Italy and Sicily from the late fourth century BC to Roman times. The subjects of these comedies were derived largely form day-to-day activities of family life and revolve mostly around improbably romantic entanglements. Like a master falling in love with an employee. New Comedy masks typically represent stock comedic characteristics such as prostitutes of all ages, masters and slaves, young and old men, parasites, flatterers, and musicians.

In Centuripe is de eerste helft van de 3de eeuw v. Chr. aardewerk gemaakt dat ná het bakproces in vele kleuren werd beschilderd. Het brengen van het offer op een altaar vóór de eigenlijke huwelijksplechtigheid is vaak afgebeeld. Apollo of Hymenaeus (de god van de bruiloft) is hier links aanwezig. Rechts is de bruid bezig met het offer en kijkt om naar de bruidegom. Als symbool van liefde zweeft Eros tussen hen in.

This rare polychromed krater, one of fewer than ten in the U.S., is important both as a work of art and as a window into the social climate in the ancient city of Centuripe, on the modern-day island of Sicily. Kraters from this region are distinguished by the wide range of pastel colors hand-painted on the clay after firing. Unfortunately, this technique also accounts for the impermanence of the colors.

In ancient Greek culture, major life events — weddings, births and deaths — were typically commemorated with elaborate and expensive gifts such as this krater. On the clay surface we see an epaulia, a gift-giving ceremony that took place on the third day of the wedding celebrations. Seated in the center, in right profile, is the bride with a woman servant behind her. She faces two guests on the right. The central portion of the painting is missing but by analogy with better-preserved vessels from the same region, a depiction of the presentation of a wedding gift by the wreathed figure seems likely. This gift was potentially a fan, chest or pair of sandals, all of which were traditional wedding gifts in the Hellenic world.

Questo vaso policromo centuripino, vivacemente dipinto a tempera dopo la cottura  è stato ritrovato in una tomba. Le modanature decorative,il bordo del coperchio e la testa di leone in origine erano dorate. Il piede ed il finale sono mancanti. Solo la facciata è decorata. Sul corpo è rappresentato un gruppo di musicisti e ballerine, forse ispirato da un gioco come Theophoroumene, di Menandro, lo scrittore della Nuova Commedia. I delfini sul coperchio sono quasi del tutto cancellate.
